ESSAY WRITING: PART II

Writing Skills II
For the second writing task of the test paper, you are expected to write an essay of not less than 350 words.

Basic rules
  1. You need to read the question carefully to see what is required. You may need to define, describe, classify, compare, contrast, explain or show cause and effect.
  2. Plan your time. Make sure you have set aside some time to:
  • study the question and write out the points
  • write the essay
  • check the essay
    3.   Brainstorm for ideas. Organise the points in a logical manner.    4.   The following are some organisational patterns that you can follow:
  • Linear order
  • Chronological order
  • Problem-solution order
  • Cause-effect order
  • Topical order
    5.   Put your ideas into an outline. There should be an introduction, a body and a conclusion. Make  sure there is a strong introduction and a neat conclusion.

    6.   Make use of linkers or discourse markers to connect the ideas in your essay. (Examples of linkers are: firstly, secondly, next and consequently)
    7.   Once you have finished writing your draft, go through the essay again to check for spelling and grammatical errors.

WRITING TIPS: PART I

TIPS: (REPORT WRITING)

1. Write the title and underline
2. Write in 3 paragraphs (minimum, body can be more than 1 para)
3. 1st sentence write the types of graphs/diagrams/headlines etc.
4. 2nd sentence write the most outstanding point
5. Body - write only information that is outstanding (key features, not features.. Features just means every single point, you need to be selective in choosing the most important ones only)
6. Conclusion is just one single sentence as summary.
7. All words after 200 are not check/read/examined. Examiners will not read after that so stick to the word limit.
8. Try to link all the info and explain it in a simple but effective way.
9. Titles are considered 1 word (but I could be wrong)
10. Good luck, and always answer the essay question first before trying to write this report.
